Application Process

1. find a supervisor at NUT

If you wish to be an exchange student at NUT, you need to find your supervisor at NUT first.
Please refer to "Research Laboratory Guidebook", find your field of interest and try to contact a prospective supervisor DIRECTLY.

2. contact Int'l Student Affairs, NUT

If you receive a positive response from your prospective supervisor, please let us know.

for Exchange Students

We will make a tentative reservation for the dormitory in the order of those who have been assigned a supervisor at NUT (Research students are not eligible).
*If the dormitory rooms are full, you may not be able to stay in the dormitory.
*If the dormitory rooms are full, you may not be able to stay in the dormitory.

3. submit application documents

Please download the application documents from the links below and submit them by the deadline.

*NUT will not accept application documents from those who have not found their supervisors.

for research students

Please transfer the examination fee of 9,800 yen to the account designated by NUT.

4. acceptance or non-acceptance is discussed by a committee within NUT

Acceptance or non-acceptance is discussed by a committee within NUT.

5. NUT issues an acceptance letter

After the acceptance is approved by a committee on campus, NUT will issue an acceptance letter.
The acceptance letter will be sent to you and your reference via email as scanned data.

6. NUT prepares documents for visa application

for student visa for stays of more than 3 months

NUT will apply for Certificate of Eligibility (CoE).
It takes 1-3 months for issuance. Since when it is issued is totally up to the immigration agency, we can not answer it.
Once your CoE has been issued, it will be sent to you via email as scanned data.

*You might be unable to come to Japan before your scheduled start date.
We recommend that you purchase tickets that can be changed or purchase tickets after the CoE is issued.

for short-term visa

NUT will issue Schedule of Stay, Letter of Reason for Invitation and Letter of Guarantee.

7. visa application and travel preparation

visa application

Please apply for a visa at the nearest embassy/consulate general located in your country of origin or residence with the documents issued in 6.
*You need to prepare the Visa Application Form and other required documents by yourself. Please check Pre-Arrival Information for New Students

travel insurance

Those who stay in Japan for less than 3 months should purchase a travel insurance.
(It is recommended that those who will stay for more than 3 months also purchase insurance.)
Please find and purchase your own insurance to cover medical expenses for injuries and illnesses during your stay in Japan.
Once you have joined, please submit a copy of your insurance policy to the International Student Affairs.

8. arrive in Japan and enroll in NUT

for all non-regular students

GAKKENSAI Insurance

All students of NUT need to join “Insurance for injuries from accidents during education and research activity (GAKKENSAI)”.
The total cost is 1,340 yen per 1year and to be paid by cash upon your arrival.
Please prepare exactly 1,340 yen, as change is not available.

for exchange students

futon (Japanese style quilt and mattress)

NUT will lend a futon-set to exchange students. Please provide your own pillow and sheets.

for research students

admission fee

Admission fee is 84,600 yen. Please transfer it to the account designated by NUT after arriving in Japan.

tuition fee

Tuition fee is 29,700 yen per month and is not calculated by the day.
